Seddon Completes Kitchen Overhaul At Queen’s Hospital

Kitchen facilities at Queen’s Hospital in Burton have undergone a major refit under a £1.4 million pound project.

The 28-strong team at the Catering Production Unit (CPU) provides over 50,000 portions of food per day for patients, staff and visitors at Burton and for five other hospitals in Staffordshire, Shropshire and Warwickshire.

New state-of-the-art facilities have now been introduced following the refurbishment project, carried out by Staffordshire-based building and maintenance company J & S Seddon.

Since the installation, the CPU received the maximum five-star rating from Health Inspectors following a recent visit.

Both the kitchen and sterile services department at the Burton Hospital are being re-vamped as part of the contract with Burton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Hospital catering services manager Maralyn Read said: “Although the building housing our catering equipment was of a fairly modern design, it was kitted out some 20 years ago and the time had come to give it a major overhaul.

“The new kitchen is much easier to keep clean and it is also more eco friendly. We are saving water with fewer floor drains and saving energy with new steam boilers and chillers which are much more efficient than our old ones.

“We are a very busy unit catering for many different specialist diets including those for people with medical conditions like diabetes, some with food allergies, and those from different cultures and religions.

“Food served to patients in hospital is vitally important as they need good nutrition to aid their recovery so we are delighted to have such modern, efficient premises to work from.”

Rodney Leake, of J & S Seddon Building oversaw the contract. He said: “We had up to 30 operatives working on site and it was a challenge to get the work completed within 14 weeks.

“In order to keep all the services on site during the renovations, temporary kitchen facilities were introduced, so we were pleased to meet the handover deadline so as to keep disruption to a minimum.”
