Wool Innovative Keeps New Moorlands Homes Green
A Staffordshire Moorlands social housing project has had its ‘green’ credentials boosted thanks to new eco friendly insulation.
New homes being built at Forsbrook are among the first to benefit from the use of sheep’s wool in the region.
Stoke-on-Trent based construction company, J & S Seddon (Building), is using wool to lag the lofts of the four properties, being built for Moorlands Housing in the village.
The woollen insulation is providing a natural way to improve environmental performance and save energy bills at the Cheadle Road site.
J & S Seddon is a supporter of Black Mountain Insulation, a Rhyl-based company who has developed the insulation innovation.
The national construction company has backed the method after extensive testing showed that wool was the perfect green solution for insulation issues.
Bob Duncalf, Managing Director, Moorlands Housing, said: “"One of our key business objectives is to improve energy efficiency and what better way than using a natural product.
“We have done a number of actions over the year with Seddon and this is a typical example of their innovative approach."
Alan Nixon, managing director of J & S Seddon (Building), which has its headquarters in Duke Street, Fenton,.said: “The woollen insulation has several benefits. It is easy to fit and we do not have to use protective masks, which is normal with the general insulation material used in the trade.
“It is also helping to improve the eco-rating of the homes under the Government’s Code for Sustainable Homes scheme.”
“As a natural by-product of the sheep farming industry it is sustainable and natural, as well as biodegradable and recyclable.”
Black Mountain, has invested in a dedicated factory to manufacture wool insulation. The wool comes from both English and Welsh sheep farms.
