J & S Seddon Celebrates Hat Trick of Safety Awards

Site managers working for Stoke-on-Trent based building company J & S Seddon have taken top awards for safety.
Three of the company’s site management team have been recognised by the Building Safety Group in their 2008 Site Manager awards scheme. Martin Hall, site manager at a major housebuilding project in Cannock, has been named Midland and North Site Manager of the Year, while colleagues Keith Harris and Rodney Leake were honoured as runners-up.
Martin, aged 60, is project manager for the company on a major regeneration project at the Bevan Lee Road estate, Cannock.
The scheme involves the demolition of 108 properties in three phases and their replacement with 128 homes and a community centre for the Beth Johnson Housing Association, part of the Sanctuary housing group, and Cannock Chase District Council.

He said: “I feel honoured to have been recognised in this way. Standards of health and safety are high on the Bevan Lee site and we are always striving to improve further.

“I must stress that the award has been achieved through hard work by the whole workforce. Everyone working on the site can be proud of their efforts and deserve recognition.”

Martin praised the work of site agent Trevor Stanway and foreman Tim Wilkes in helping to achieve the award.

J &S Seddon is a member of the Considerate Construction scheme and achieved an excellent score of 34 out of 36 in an assessment of their work at Bevan Lee.

Martin has overseen record recycling levels on the project, with more than 97 per cent of all waste generated at the site being used again.

Keith Harris is manager of the J & S Seddon team working on the new Rowan Village Extra Care housing project at George Avenue, Meir, Stoke-on-Trent for Staffordshire Housing.

Rodney Leake manages one of J & S Seddon’s programme being carried out on behalf of Renew, in Shelton.

Each year, the Building Safety Group, nationwide independent safety consultants, presents an award to one manager in each of six regions who, in the opinion of its safety advisors, has maintained the highest standards of health and safety. The competition is open both to principal contractors and specialist trade contractors

Micheal Setter, chairman of the Building Safety Group, said: “To receive this award across three sites is unique. J & S Seddon has displayed a proactive commitment to health and safety.”

This award is the latest success for J & S Seddon. In April, it was named one of the top construction companies in the West Midlands after taking the Leadership In People title at the Constructing Excellence Awards, organised by West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence, an organisation set up with support from the EU and Advantage West Midlands to improve the capabilities and competitiveness of construction companies across the region.

In the same month it also secured a Built In Quality Award for its work at a health centre on the outskirts of Crewe.
