Seddon Go Green At Major Redevelopment Scheme
Record recycling levels are being achieved at a major housing redevelopment project in South Staffordshire.
Almost 100 per cent of waste material from demolition work at Bevan Lee Road estate, Cannock, is being re-used or recycled by contractor Seddon Building.
The Stoke-on-Trent based building company is working on the Bevan Lee Road Redevelopment project on behalf of the Beth Johnson Housing Association – part of Sanctuary Housing Group - and Cannock Chase District Council.
The scheme involves the demolition of 108 properties in three phases and their replacement with 128 homes and a community centre.
Martin Hall, Project Manager for J & S Seddon, said 97 per cent of all waste from phase two of the demolition process has been recycled, including bricks, concrete, metal, glass, wood and trees.
A substantial amount of concrete from the site has been crushed and re-used as hardcore on site, while trees and hedgerows were mulched and will be used in the gardens of new homes on the estate.
Glass from the windows, together with bricks and timber is all separated and recycled, while metal is retrieved using magnets and sent to be recycled into steel.
Mr Hall said: “We are committed to recycling as a company and are meeting the requirements that could become law later this year, when the Environment Agency’s approved site waste management plan comes into force."
“J & S Seddon achieved an average recycling rate of 75 per cent last year at Bevan Lee, but we are committed to a programme of continual improvement and are pleased to have reached new heights at 97 per cent at the site."
“As a result the Redevelopment project will have a very good eco-rating and we are helping to protect the environment and bring community benefits, by using local labour and suppliers where ever possible. The project also scores very highly in the Considerate Constructors’ scheme.”
Demolition work on phase two of the project has been completed and Seddon have now begun digging foundations for 45 new homes.
Mr Hall said that he envisaged these homes in phase two would be completed by early Spring 2009, with phase three on track for completion in late Autumn of that year.
The Redevelopment scheme suffered some delays due to the very wet summer in 2007 but is now back on track after the phase two demolition work was completed ahead of schedule.
“We have fought hard to get back on track after the wettest summer in living memory and are now making good progress on phase two,” added Mr Hall.
Phase one of the redevelopment is complete with the development of 45 new homes.
Speaking about the overall project, John Reece, Beth Johnson’s Development Manager for the Bevan Lee estate scheme, said: “After a long planning and construction stage, I am really pleased that phase one residents have now moved into their new homes. Phase two work is progressing well. We have already begun the consultation process with residents regarding options available for their new homes.”
