New School Vision Takes Shape
West Midlands construction company Seddon has begun a £1.1 million contract, which will enable a high school to build a £30 million cutting edge Academy on its site.
The Birmingham-based builders have started an 18-week contract to demolish the old school gym at Dartmouth High School in Great Barr and replace it with a temporary sports hall for the 1,150 pupils to use pending the project.
Dartmouth High School’s existing 1960s buildings, in Wilderness Lane, will be demolished in phases and replaced by world-class facilities to be known as the Q3 Academy, specialising in design and enterprise.
Though building work is not scheduled to finish until November 2009, the Q3 Academy will open in existing school buildings next September.
Principal Caroline Badyal said: “Now that the builders are on site it is very exciting for us to see the start of our fantastic new state of the art Academy. It will really make a difference to the lives of not just our pupils but to the whole community.
“I am delighted Seddon have such a reputation for health and safety and are carrying out the preliminary works with minimum disruption to our daily schedules in school.”
Kevin Wood, area director of Seddon, based in Summer Lane, said: “We are delighted to be involved in carrying out these enabling works and working closely with the trustees at Dartmouth High School at the start of such a prestigious scheme.”
