Seddon Gets The ‘Green’ Light With New Contract
An East Midlands construction company has underlined its commitment to sustainability through the use of the latest ‘green’ building techniques.
Derby-based J & S Seddon (Building) Limited are to install an environmentally-friendly sedum roof and larch boarding to the exterior of a new sports and social club building being erected in Leicester.
Creating a living carpet of succulent plants, which will blend in with the landscape, the turf roof not only improves drainage by retaining and absorbing up to seventy five per cent of rainwater, but it also improves air quality as the plants absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen.
The sedum is also expected to extend roof life, saving on the cost of re-waterproofing and saving heat through acting as an extra layer of insulation - while larch boarding to the building’s exterior will require no painting or maintenance.
Work started this month on the £750,000 contract to replace the existing clubhouse –known as The Emerald Centre – and is due for completion in early July.
The work has attracted funding from both the European Regional Development Fund, and the East Midlands Development Agency Single Regeneration Budget.
Adam Williams, divisional director of J & S Seddon (Building), based in Pride Park, Derby, said: “The building has been designed in accordance with the Government’s initiative to reducing carbon emissions from public buildings.
“We are pleased to take on board the current thinking on conservation and sustainability and we are proud to be associated with the scheme.”
The new clubhouse, being built in Gypsy Lane, Greater Humberstone, will include changing rooms and shower facilities as well as a meeting room. The club began life in 1996 as LISCA (Leicester Irish Sports and Cultural Association).
Now its facilities are set to provide many opportunities for people of all ages and from all backgrounds. Available for hire, the building will provide a variety of computer training courses as well as community based initiative.
