Seddon’s Secure Meir Project

J & S Seddon (Building) Limited has secured an £8 million deal to build a state-of-the-art housing development for older people in Meir.

A purpose-built housing complex at George Avenue in Meir, is being built which will incorporate 75 one and two bedroom apartments.

Up to 25 of the apartments will be available for leasehold sale, six will be for older carers of a learning disabled adult, eight will be for intermediate care use and the remainder will be for rent to people nominated by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

The centre will provide modern homes and care facilities within a safe, secure village-type environment, complemented by communal facilities including a gym, restaurant, hairdressing salon and healthy living centre.

Staffordshire Housing Association will own and manage the development. Other partners involved in the project are Stoke-on-Trent City Council, the former Shropshire and Staffordshire Strategic Health Authority – now West Midlands Strategic Health Authority – RENEW North Staffordshire, the Department of Health Extra Care Housing Fund and the Housing Corporation.

Architects for the development are Christopher Taylor Design, based in Leek.

Staffordshire Housing Association is an experienced provider of older people’s housing throughout North Staffordshire. It owns and manages Bradeley Village, the UK’s first and largest social housing retirement complex.

Sandra Barber, of Staffordshire Housing Association said: “Whereas Bradeley Village was built with active older people in mind, the Meir complex goes one-step further by providing on-site care for residents who need it.

“We will be taking the successes of Bradeley Village and adapting them to meet the needs of the people who will live at the new development. But the Meir project will be far removed from a traditional care home. It will truly be housing for the third age, enabling its residents to lead independent, fulfilling lives.”

Jim Blairs, managing director of J & S Seddon (Building), said: “This is a superb project for Meir and the City of Stoke-on-Trent in general.

“The work is expected to take 70 weeks and innovative methods of construction are being used on the site, with due consideration to environmental factors.”
