Hard Labour Reaps Rewards
A Sheffield man - who started in the construction industry labouring on a building site - has been singled out for praise after graduating with a First Class Honours Degree.
Lee Hartley is now a qualified quantity surveyor, based at our regional office in Normanton, West Yorkshire.
The 28-year-old, who lives in Aston, has been honoured for his achievement at a glittering ceremony at London's Park Lane Hilton Hotel, where company bosses presented him with a commemorative crystal glass to mark his graduation from Sheffield's Hallam University.
Lee said: "I never expected to go to university. When I left sixth form college I went labouring on a building site because I needed the money. A year or so later I spotted an advert for a trainee quantity surveyor with Seddon and decided to give it a go, at the age of 19. I got the job and have never stopped learning since. First I did my ONC, then an HNC on day release at Chesterfield College. Finally I went on to do my honours degree in quantity surveying at Sheffield's Hallam University. It's cost me nothing apart from a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and I count myself really lucky to be working for a company prepared to invest so much in my training. It's not every firm which will allow you to go on day release for eight years and now I really enjoy what I do."
J & S Seddon (Building) has a growing reputation as a training provider. Already this year the company has netted two awards.
In March the company was named one of the country's foremost training providers in the Quality in Construction Awards, organised by industry publication Construction News and backed by the DTI and Constructing Excellence.
Only weeks later, the company further enchanced its reputation by winning the Investors in People Award sponsored by the Learning and Skills Council in Staffordshire where it has its headquarters.
Kevin Wood, the director in charge of Seddon's Normanton office is delighted by Lee Hartley's achievement. He said "I was really pleased that Lee had achieved his first class honours degree this year. Despite some sleepless nights in finishing off his final dissertation achieving a first class degree was always his ultimate goal and we are very pleased to have been able to support Lee in his ambition."
Well done Lee.
